Latpanchar Birding

Birding at Latpanchar

Nestled in the lap of the eastern Himalayas, Latpanchar is a small village within the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary in Darjeeling hills. The area emerged as a haven for birding enthusiasts during the last couple of decades. This offbeat destination, away from the bustling city life, offers a serene environment where the melody of birdcalls harmonizes with the rustling leaves.

Latpanchar is situated at an altitude of around 4,500 feet, surrounded by the lush Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary. This area is not only rich in biodiversity but also offers stunning views of the Himalayan range including the Kanchenjunga massif.

Weather

With an altitude of about 4500 feet, Latpanchar is neither too warm during the summers nor too cold during the winter. Making it an ideal destination to visit almost throughout the year.

During summer months, the weather is pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C. This is an excellent time for birding as many species are active during this period. Heavy rainfall is common during the monsoon, making it less favourable for birdwatching due to wet and muddy trails. The post-monsoon period offers clear skies, and the temperatures range between 10°C and 20°C. This is considered an optimal time for birding. Winter brings cooler temperatures, ranging from 5°C to 15°C. While mornings and evenings can be chilly, this season is also ideal for birding, and the clear skies provide excellent visibility.
