Sandakphu Trek Routes

Multiple Ways to Explore the Singalila Ridge

There is more than one way to explore the Sandakphu and Singalila region. The choice of route depends largely on how much time you have, your walking experience and the kind of mountain experience you are looking for.

Some routes focus on reaching Sandakphu and returning within a few days. Others continue towards Phalut, taking walkers deeper into the Singalila landscape and offering a longer experience of its forests, villages and open mountain ridges.

The principal trekking approaches can be broadly divided into four route patterns:

  1. Gurdum – Sandakphu – Gurdum
  2. Maneybhanjan – Sandakphu – Gurdum
  3. Gurdum – Sandakphu – Phalut – Gorkhey
  4. Maneybhanjan – Sandakphu – Phalut – Gorkhey

These are not four fixed itineraries. Each route can be adapted with different starting points, overnight stops and walking stages. The following overview will help you understand the possibilities.

1. Gurdum – Sandakphu – Gurdum

If you have very limited time and are an experienced trekker, this is the quickest way to reach Sandakphu on foot.

The actual trek involves two days of walking. On the first day, you climb from Gurdum to Sandakphu. The second day is spent descending along the same general route to Gurdum.

However, the journey requires two additional days for reaching the starting point and returning to your next destination. Your starting and ending points can also be nearby settlements such as Srikhola or Timburey, depending on the arrangements.

The main challenge is the steep ascent from Gurdum to Sandakphu. The elevation gain is approximately 1,200 metres in a single day. This is a substantial climb by any standard and should not be underestimated.

Route characteristics

  • Trekking duration: 2 days.
  • Total trip allowance: Approximately 4 days, including access and return transfers.
  • Elevation gain: Approximately 1,200 metres on the ascent.
  • Difficulty: Challenging.
  • Recommended for: Experienced trekkers with good fitness and previous experience of steep mountain ascents.

This route is not recommended for beginners or people with limited trekking experience. Although it is the fastest way to reach Sandakphu, the concentrated elevation gain makes it physically demanding.

2. Maneybhanjan – Sandakphu – Gurdum

This is arguably the most popular way to trek to Sandakphu. It follows the traditional approach from Maneybhanjan, gradually gaining altitude through a series of mountain settlements before reaching the high ridge.

The route passes through Chitre, Meghma, Tonglu or Tumling, Gairibas and Kalipokhri before reaching Sandakphu. The descent towards Gurdum provides a different experience, with forested trails and quieter mountain surroundings.

Unlike the direct ascent from Gurdum, this route allows walkers to gain altitude more gradually. It is therefore suitable for a much wider range of trekkers.

Depending on fitness, walking pace and overnight arrangements, the actual trekking programme can be completed in approximately three to four days.

One distinctive feature of this route is the presence of the famous Sandakphu Land Rovers. These vehicles operate along the motorable road that runs alongside much of the traditional trekking route. You will often see them travelling in the same direction as walkers.

This means that the route does not offer an exclusively wilderness walking experience. Instead, it combines traditional mountain trekking with the character of a well-established Himalayan trail.

Route characteristics

  • Starting point: Maneybhanjan.
  • Trekking duration: Approximately 3–4 days.
  • Ending point: Gurdum, with onward connection towards Srikhola.
  • Difficulty: Moderate.
  • Recommended for: Beginners with basic fitness, regular walkers and those undertaking their first multi-day Himalayan trek.

For most people looking to experience Sandakphu for the first time, this is an excellent starting option.

3. Gurdum – Sandakphu – Phalut – Gorkhey

This route combines the approach from Gurdum with the extended walk towards Phalut and Gorkhey. It is a more comprehensive exploration of the Singalila landscape.

From Gurdum, the trail climbs towards Sandakphu. Instead of returning to Gurdum, walkers continue along the high ridge towards Phalut.

The Sandakphu–Phalut section is particularly rewarding. Much of the walk follows open high-altitude terrain, with expansive views of the Kangchenjunga massif and the surrounding Himalayan ranges.

From Phalut, the trail descends towards Gorkhey, a small mountain settlement surrounded by forest and hills.

This is a circular trekking arrangement that combines forest trails, high mountain ridges and remote settlements. Depending on the available time, walking experience and overnight arrangements, the trek can be completed in approximately three to five days.

There are several possible variations in the daily walking stages. The route can be adapted to allow more time at particular locations or to suit the physical capabilities of the group.

Route characteristics

  • Starting point: Gurdum or nearby settlements.
  • Trekking duration: Approximately 3–5 days.
  • Main destinations: Sandakphu, Phalut and Gorkhey.
  • Difficulty: Challenging.
  • Recommended for: Experienced trekkers with good physical fitness.

This route is particularly attractive to people who want to explore more of Singalila without following the traditional Maneybhanjan approach.

4. Maneybhanjan – Sandakphu – Phalut – Gorkhey

This is the longest and most comprehensive of the principal Sandakphu trekking options.

The journey begins at Maneybhanjan and follows the traditional approach to Sandakphu. From there, walkers continue towards Phalut before descending to Gorkhey.

The route combines the settlements and forests of the traditional Sandakphu trail with the extended high-ridge walking experience towards Phalut.

It is particularly rewarding for those who want to spend several days exploring the Singalila landscape on foot. The longer duration also allows greater flexibility in choosing overnight stops and maintaining a more relaxed walking pace.

Depending on the itinerary, the trek generally requires a minimum of five to seven days, with eight days also possible for a more leisurely programme.

Route characteristics

  • Starting point: Maneybhanjan.
  • Trekking duration: Approximately 5–8 days.
  • Main destinations: Sandakphu, Phalut and Gorkhey.
  • Difficulty: Moderate to challenging, depending on the daily stages.
  • Recommended for: Walkers with reasonable fitness who want an extended Himalayan walking experience.

For those who have sufficient time, this is arguably the most complete way to experience the Sandakphu and Singalila region.

How to Choose the Right Route?

The amount of time available is often the most important factor when selecting a Sandakphu trek.

If you have only a few days and considerable trekking experience, the Gurdum–Sandakphu return route is the quickest option. However, its steep ascent makes it unsuitable for inexperienced walkers.

If you are undertaking your first Sandakphu trek, the traditional Maneybhanjan approach is generally the better choice. The gradual ascent and availability of accommodation along the route make it more accessible.

If you have three to five trekking days and good experience, the Gurdum–Sandakphu–Phalut–Gorkhey route offers a longer exploration of the ridge.

For those who want to experience the traditional approach as well as the extended Phalut section, the Maneybhanjan–Sandakphu–Phalut–Gorkhey route is the most comprehensive option.

There is no single itinerary that suits everyone. The route can be modified according to available time, walking ability, interests and accommodation arrangements.
